We came across the Trabant 601 Universal in Berlin that has a nice looking sun visor on it. And here in Prague we come across the Trabant 601 Limousine that was produced between the years 1963-1990 by former East German auto maker VEB Sachsenring Automobilwerke Zwickau.
The “Trabi” as it was called is a very simple and fun looking car. From the front angle it almost looks like a cartoon car smiling away.
Here we have one Trabant 601 of a total 2,818,547 produced over the years that is still in pretty good condition.
Here’s a look from the front of the vehicle. A very simple looks, and a very simple creme colour paint job.
I can’t help but feel that this car looks rather toy like. It looks like one of those animated cars from the movie Cars. The Great big smile on its face.
Lets take a look at the back of the car. That is a massive rear window, I like it. Nice curve to it too.
Now there is an interesting story about Trabant’s in general. They took a really long time to get delivered after being ordered. So much so that used models were worth more because they were readily available. Can you imagine that? Today, a brand new car loses tremendous value immediately as soon as you leave the dealership, yet in the DDR new cars were tough to come by, thus used cars ruled!
This is a nice side angle shot, a beautiful sunny glow adds some colour to the creme paint. I like the pointy tips or mini wings in the rear. The tail and signal lights are nicely incorporated into the fins.
Despite the fact that these cars had an average lifespan as high as 30 years, they were well known for poor performance, an outdated 2-stroke engine, and of course as I mentioned major production shortages.
Can you imagine these cars moving around all over East Germany? It was the most common car in the former DDR.
Or imagine a line of a whole bunch of these cars all identical, in 1989 crawling along the “Trabi Trail” which was the route through Hungary or Czechoslovakia en route to West Germany.
Here is a look inside. That plastic front window crank and the seat belt holder make me think this particular Trabant 601 was made in the 1980s.
Wow, that front passenger seat has got a lot of good use. Look at those threads hanging on desperately to that foam!!!
What a nice smile. Such a cute car. The steel looks so round, especially near the grill and headlights.
The way that strip of steel wraps around the tail lights is very interesting.
Love that rear window. It is massive! I love a car that has high visibility. Great for a scenic drive.
I can’t see how that rear bumper could be very effective. It is so tiny.
So, there you have it the Trabant 601 Limousine found in Prague!
